What is “Where the Lost Wander” about?
In this epic and haunting love story set on the Oregon Trail, a family and their unlikely protector find their way through peril, uncertainty, and loss.
The Overland Trail, 1853: Naomi May never expected to be widowed at twenty. Eager to leave her grief behind, she sets off with her family for a life out West. On the trail, she forms an instant connection with John Lowry, a half-Pawnee man straddling two worlds and a stranger in both.
But life in a wagon train is fraught with hardship, fear, and death. Even as John and Naomi are drawn to each other, the trials of the journey and their disparate pasts work to keep them apart. John’s heritage gains them safe passage through hostile territory only to come between them as they seek to build a life together.
When a horrific tragedy strikes, decimating Naomi’s family and separating her from John, the promises they made are all they have left. Ripped apart, they can’t turn back, they can’t go on, and they can’t let go. Both will have to make terrible sacrifices to find each other, save each other, and eventually…make peace with who they are.
This book is about a family that takes the Oregon Trail, in order to get to California. This was during the mid 1800’s, so we get a lot of insight in the relationship between white people and Native Americans.
I’m Dominican, so it has been amazing learning a lot more about this time period and what it meant to go out West. I remember learning about it in high school, but I’ve never appreciated the hardships of this journey as I did, reading this book.
I must say, this is the book I’ve enjoyed the most out of this subscription! You guys know I’m a sucker for historical fiction. This book has been a journey on its own. You’ll learn about the trail and how hard it was. It basically meant loosing your family at some point. Going out West was a risk not many families would be willing to take right now.
Moreover, Naomi May stands out in every way. She’s not a conventional woman for her time, but I dare say, she wouldn’t be conventional now either. She was a true artist. She saw things not many see. I guess that’s what happened with John Lowry. She saw him for who he was, even before he found his place on earth.
Naomi had no fear of speaking her mind and her wishes. At some point she might seem impulsive, but that was not it. She was sincere and the truth will make you uncomfortable more often than not. In addition, her family was amazing. Her mother was the wisest out of all the characters in the book. Her brothers were super funny, especially Webb being obsessed with John Lowry’s animals and running around barefoot!
On the other hand, John Lowry was the definition of loyalty. Although he struggled his whole life with his identity, the journey West helps him find his place. No matter how many times he tried to stay away from Naomi, that’s exactly where he was supposed to be. So, when Naomi is abducted it doesn’t take him even two seconds to know he had to go after her.
This is a beautiful story of family, love and overcoming hardships. This story will make you laugh out loud as it will make you cry like a baby. As I said before, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and couldn’t put the book down!
