I don’t know about you guys, but this book got me addicted to most of Jay Mclean’s novels!
This is a perfect series to read during this quarantine days. They’re very strong emotionally but light enough to bring a laugh or two during this hard times.
More Than This is my favorite out of all her books. The plot is really strong, involving a murder case and all. That means one of our main characters is swamped with grief.
Mikayla is looking forward to her prom night with her boyfriend and best friend. However, that night turns into a nightmare with tragedy and betrayal at hand. She doesn’t expect to meet Jake, though. A handsome guy she suddenly meets when heartbreak was all she could see.
Jake consequently stands by her side when everything goes to hell and Mikayla has nowhere to go. That’s why his family decides to take her in until they go to college in only a few months. Although grief is absorbing Mikayla in many ways, they grow closer and closer. But the trauma of having a cheating boyfriend, does not allow her to let him in.
I’m going to warn you, this is a very slow burn romance. I believe this story is more about support, love and friendship. I particularly loved Jake’s patience. I think that people don’t appreciate this virtue as they should, especially in men. Having a patient man that gives you space and time in order to heal, but never lets go of your hand when you need him, is priceless.
Another thing I loved, was how close he was with his friends. Each one of them played a great part in Mikayla’s recovery. They respected that this girl was special to their friend, so they also took her in their little group. This quote in particular cracked me up:
“Cam starts laughing, “Oh, I love it when she reads.” He turns to Lucy who’s face is starting to contort and turn to a bright shade of red, “She reads these smutty books, like full on dirty shit, full of sex and like… bdsm shit.”
“I’m not joking boys, they’re like full on pornographic. Talking about silky shafts and veiny dicks and shit,” Logan is now on the ground holding his side from the pain of laughing too hard.
“Sometimes she’ll be reading, then all of sudden she’ll put her book down and look at me like she wants to eat me, literally eat me!” he yells, laughing harder, still swatting away her hands that are trying to shut him up, “I mean I don’t mind it, not at all. It’s hot as fuck. And she wants to try everything she reads in these books. Like… everything. She learns everything from these books… so I don’t give a shit when, of how much she reads, I get rewards.”
If you haven’t read this yet, I really recommend it as well as all her other books!
